St. Mary's exit sees new fans forgetting English keeper in October

Joe Lumley left Southampton way before Aaron Ramsdale but his starting luck has been the same as the latter. Except that Lumley is now forgotten by his new fans too.

Southampton wished well to two former English goalkeepers while reworking the final squad in August. One was Aaron Ramsdale whose departure was talked as self-damaging for the Saints, at first, though an early third Championship place was still there for the taking.

Funny enough, the only affected aspect of Ramsdale's exit has been Southampton's cash-in dream, which was supposed to be the driving motive of the deal. The 27-year-old is clocking his leftover 2025/26 Premier League time with Newcastle watching Nick Pope go upwards and onwards with 5 league clean sheets until October itself.

He isn't the only ex-Saints glovesman waiting idle from the afternoon till evening, though. Joe Lumley is also a name among backups in his Bristol City roster, but now, his new fans seem to have forgotten about his deputy capabilities too.

Bristol City fanbase doesn't rate Joe Lumley as their best backup

It's all good praising their top-notch shot-stopper, but Football League World noted Bristol fans ignoring Lumley while fearing for life without their present Number one.

He came forward to earn some Premier League roles last season, and the Championship is usually a successful workplace for Lumley. Thus, stripping the 30-year-old of a second-fiddle keeper's tag is quite a harsh verdict.

During tomorrow's Bristol outing, Lumley can be the first player Southampton meet after parting company in the recent summer. On paper, Lumley can be billed on the matchday squad, something which rest of the second-division departures like Ben Brereton Diaz and James Bree can't.

If Lumley is handed a bench ticket, then Southampton fans can look for him to greet his former counterpart Alex McCarthy following the second half. Still, let's hope that their respective camps don't share points.
