Southampton have finally won an away game this season in the Championship.

Much like the 1-0 win over Portsmouth in the hotly contested South Coast Derby, Tonda Eckert's men had to dig deep to seal another 1-0 win against Norwich City, with everyone on the pitch putting in an admirable shift.

Indeed, Lewis Dobbin - even as the main striker for the match - would win an impressive seven duels, as everyone rolled their sleeves up to ensure the Saints' away day hoodoo was broken.

The likes of Dobbin and Kuryu Matsuki, who scored the only goal of the game, will be banging on Eckert's door for more first team starts, now, as the German has some selection headaches to address, ahead of the home clash with Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.

Unfortunately for this forgotten defender, however, his exit just feels inevitable from St. Mary's, after he was nowhere to be found, even among the substitutes, for the trip to Carrow Road.

The forgotten star who is surely heading for the exit

When Saints fans stared at the lineup fielded pre-match, they would have been surprised by the inclusion of Zach Abbott.

Abbott wasn't even on the bench for the South Coast Derby, yet here he was, drafted into the main lineup against Norwich, to give James Bree a rest after his heroic performance against Pompey.

The Nottingham Forest loanee would struggle during the hard fought 1-0 win, with the young defender going on to win zero duels from his 45 minute runout, before Bree was shoved back into the first team picture.

Mads Roerslev must have been watching on, wondering what he has to do to get some minutes as another option down the right-hand side of defence.

As the Daily Echo's Dan Hargraves put it during the game, it is a "pretty damning indictment" that the Danish full-back wasn't selected, ahead of the wide-eyed Abbott, considering the Copenhagen-born number two does boast considerable Premier League experience with Brentford.

In total, he has 94 Premier League outings under his belt.

Eckert can only judge him on what he's seen during their time together on the South Coast, though, and he has been largely unremarkable, and injury-prone, with just ten appearances coming his way for the Saints, since joining the ranks last summer.

The 27-year-old is contracted to St. Mary's until the summer of 2029, but it does feel inevitable that he will be moved on, if he can't even supersede Abbott in Eckert's plans.

The hope will be that some club does take a gamble on the one-time Denmark international, as he is clearly talented, when performing at the peak of his powers.

Will a club gamble on Roerslev?

It could prove to be a hard sell at this point in time, as the number two will be noticeably rusty, having last featured for Eckert and Co. back in November last year, during a routine 3-1 Championship win over Sheffield Wednesday.

Since then, he has injury issues to contend with, but his numbers in the Premier League, as previously mentioned, could still catch the eye of a club willing to take a risk.

Indeed, the reserve figure on the South Coast was once a starter in the top-flight for the Bees, with the 2023/24 season in the Premier League seeing him collect three goal contributions from 34 league appearances.

It's a mighty shame that this version of Roerslev has never come to the forefront at St. Mary's, with Thomas Frank once noting that the Scandinavian was "Mr Reliable" in his camp.

For his sake, he needs to look for a move away, as the regular minutes he won at the Bees isn't going to fall into his lap in the South Coast anytime soon, with Bree Eckert's guaranteed starter down the right.

With Abbott also clamouring for more minutes, despite his poor cameo against Norwich, there doesn't seem to be a space for Roerslev in the current squad at Southampton, with the £3m forked out on his services feeling like a waste of money right now.
