The heartwarming gesture proving Cyle Larin is loved far beyond Southampton

If Southampton fans had to name their favourite Saints player at the moment, the large majority of them would likely utter Cyle Larin's name.

He has been a joke in front of goal so far this season, with his blistering loan spell last campaign only the start of his memorable St. Mary's journey, as he boasts a ridiculous seven goals from seven Championship games so far this season.

Tonda Eckert claimed that the Brampton Bagsman was the best striker in the division back in August, after he scored on the opening weekend versus Watford, and this is an argument that is now very hard to counter.

He is loving life on the South Coast, with this seven goal tally making the most prolific marksman in all four major English leagues at the moment.

He has spoken at length in a new interview about why this has been such a made match in heaven, after many were bemused initially when he joined for his hot-and-cold goal record all over the world.

Indeed, there were a lot of vocal doubters over whether the 31-year-old would be a success at St. Mary's or not, with his up-and-down goal return playing for the likes of Mallorca and Feyenoord fresh in the memory.

He has batted away those detractors with ease, as he has eight strikes next to his name this season in all competitions, all from only 551 minutes of action.

This has seen him swoop up the August Player of the Month accolade in the division, but while these achievements coming his way could make him big-headed, he has praised the overall feel of his environment at Southampton for getting the very best out of him.

He said modestly, when interviewed at the close of the 4-1 Bristol City win: "It’s one of the best. I think it has to do with the players around me and the staff, they make me feel at home.

“Off the pitch the club has looked after me and my family, and that’s most important for me to be able to perform and show who I am on the pitch.”

Clearly, Larin feels settled and right at home, with the 31-year-old feeling so relaxed and content off the pitch, resulting in him being in the best goal-filled spot of his entire career on the pitch, arguably.

It isn't just in his new adopted home where he keeps feeling the love, as a big gesture is set to happen back in Canada over the international break which shows how much the veteran attacker is respected, beyond the South Coast.

Indeed, the 6-foot-2 menace regularly featured for Les Rogues in the 2026 World Cup, with his international goal tally up to 34 strikes, after bagging two strikes in quick succession on the world's biggest stage.

With this red-hot streak then following him back to domestic action, his birthplace of Brampton is going to recognise him on the 27th of September for being one of Canada's all-time leading goalscorers with a one-of-a-kind key to the city.

This will surely be an emotional moment for the number nine, as his career did feel as it if were at a crossroads when he first moved to the Saints, with the goals drying up on loan at Feyenoord.

Now, he's a golden boot contender in the Championship, and a two-time goalscorer at the World Cup for his nation, with promotion up to the Premier League hopefully another memorable milestone Larin can add to his late career CV come May.
