Several Southampton players stood out last season wearing notable numbers on the back of their shirts.

Cyle Larin made the number nine jersey immediately his own at St. Mary's, with a blistering eight goals collected in Championship action.

In the past, both Adam Armstrong and Danny Ings have stood out as equally potent goalscorers on the South Coast, donning the number nine shirt.

Likewise, Finn Azaz didn't look shackled by the burden of wearing another famous jersey at Southampton last season - the number ten to be precise - with 11 goals collected, as he stood out as one of Saints' main driving forces in attack.

Adam Lallana once wore that shirt in the Premier League, before taking up a coaching role at his beloved club, with Sadio Mane's brief spell at St. Mary's also seeing him pull on the same number as the exciting Irishman.

The number 11 shirt is the next for examination, as Lewis Dobbin prepares to wear it with pride next season after completing a jaw-dropping £9m switch from Aston Villa.

The number 11 shirt at Southampton

It's fair to say, when looking over recent wearers of this specific shirt, that it hasn't always attracted modern greats like Lallana or Ings.

Rather, players such as Mislav Orsic and Mohamed Elyounoussi have worn this designated number in recent memory and flopped, with the Croat only making five unmemorable appearances for the South Coast giants, while his counterpart mustered up just nine goals from 90 clashes, as a rash waste of £16m.

It has been reclaimed by more positive performers since, with Ross Stewart scoring 11 strikes last campaign as a reliable second in command striker option to Larin, but he still ended up leaving a bad taste in the mouth when he exited as a free agent.

Truthfully, the standout player that comes to mind here in Dusan Tadic, as the Serbian trickster amassed a weighty 23 goals and 24 assists for the Saints from a mammoth 162 appearances.

Dobbin would love to follow in his footsteps, as the ex-Everton youngster can play down either wing, or as a central attacking option, much like the three-time Eredivisie champion.

The more old school among us will also note that Guly Do Prado once wore the number 11 strip, as well, with the Brazilian a cult hero for his goal contributions in League One and the Championship, before the Saints reestablished themselves as a Premier League outfit.

All this chatter will hopefully not weigh Dobbin down, as he tries to follow Larin and Azaz - away from being in awe of Tadic - in making the jersey his own next season.

Dobbin will strive to make it his own

The £9m buy shouldn't have any trouble becoming a fan favourite like Tadic, though, as he powered home ten goals for Preston North End last season.

Like Guly, too, if he can recapture this form, he could become another memorable promotion hero.

Yet, he will be keen to write his own tale, as he is a fantastic attacker in his own right, and he will be striving to elevate his game even more under Tonda Eckert's guidance.

At the moment, there will be a worry that Southampton have splashed the cash somewhat recklessly.

But, in this day and age, you have to put your money where your mouth is to win the cream of the crop, as Dobbin prays he can be an unforgettable part of the Saints winning promotion, and a deserved recipient of the number 11 shirt, subsequently.

If not, he could chucked to one side as another Orsic misfire...
