Southampton haven't let the demons of their relegation from the Premier League linger for too long.

Rather, a large portion of that squad who had to endure that bottom-of-the-table humilation, have now bounced back in style.

Indeed, Flynn Downes - who started the Saints' final Premier League match of the season - has been instrumental to this campaign's promotion push, having recently scored at Coventry City, to seal a shock win at the league leaders.

Moreover, Taylor Harwood-Bellis could have entered into a fresh season, still bruised and beaten by his shambolic top-flight stay.

Instead, he has dusted himself down and been a titan in the demanding Championship, so much so that Tonda Eckert has hailed him as the "ultimate professional" for how committed he remains to the cause.

Alongside Downes and Harwood-Bellis, there is another instantly recognisable St. Mary's figure who has benefitted from the reality check of relegation, as he has become far more gritty in approach, while also becoming more of a creative force in the second tier.

The Southampton defender who is reborn after relegation

Of course, not everyone has committed to the long haul project on the South Coast, like the reinvigorated duo of Downes and Harwood-Bellis.

Adam Armstrong, who had 174 appearances under his belt for the Saints, moved on to Wolverhampton Wanderers in January, in a move that could have been disorientating.

Thankfully, the Saints machine has chugged along nicely, despite this minor setback, with Ryan Manning continuing to stick out as an unlikely hero.

During Southampton's relegation woes, the Galway-born defender wouldn't always come across as the most reliable member of the backline.

Indeed, from 24 first team appearances in the league, only two clean sheets would be collected. To make matters worse, he wasn't exactly bombing down the left flank with much venom, as only one meagre assist was collected.

He would stay put, though, and he has suddenly become an integral part of Eckert's well-oiled set-up.

Manning, who is about to jet off to the Republic of Ireland national team alongside St. Mary's comrade Finn Azaz, has averaged a brave 3.7 duels won on average this season in the wearying second tier, as he has helped the promotion chasers to three clean sheets across their last five outings.

But, it's his ability to create chances at will that is seriously more impressive right now, with a stunning six goals and four assists amassed, placing him into an exclusive list.

Sporting Life has gone through the ten most creative playmakers in the division, in terms of chances created, and Manning - surprisingly - sits in fifth spot overall, next to the likes of Hayden Hackney and Sorba Thomas, who boast 15 assists between them in league action.

While many looking in might expect someone like Azaz with ten goals to be a crucial hero in games to come, as the playoffs are hopefully secured, Manning is clearly the under-the-radar man to watch.

Left-back isn't always seen as the most glamorous position on the pitch, but Manning is certainly making this spot at St. Mary's memorable.
