Arsenal are the most celebrated team in the FA Cup's long and distinguished history.

Indeed, the Gunners have hoisted the famous trophy aloft a mighty 14 times, with Manchester United just one trophy lift behind, on 13.

Southampton's one and only FA Cup final triumph to date came in 1976, when the South Coast side toppled the aforementioned Red Devils 1-0 at the old Wembley.

50 years on from that famous final, Tonda Eckert will be hoping his team can pull off another monumental upset by dumping the FA Cup's most decorated winners out of the competition, at the quarter-final stages.

Why Eckert could be just the manager to upset Arsenal

It is unlikely, but the German has consistently punched above his weight as Southampton's boss, ever since he was given the full-time job, after Will Still's dismissal.

He has led the playoff chasers to a stunning 15 wins from 26 games in charge, with memorable wins, such as the one where Southampton upset Frank Lampard's Coventry City 2-1 on their own patch, sticking out.

The Sky Blues look nailed on to win promotion to the Premier League, as they sit at the summit of the Championship table, yet they crashed to an unexpected defeat, when Eckert's energetic troops travelled to the CBS Arena.

Therefore, as the Cup tie is being played on Southampton's home soil, why can't another league leader - in the form of Mikel Arteta's Arsenal - be on the receiving end of an equally bruising upset?

Funnier things have happened in this year's iteration of the competition, as well, as League One Port Vale shocked Premier League Sunderland in the last round.

Eckert will desperately want to follow in the footsteps of a certain ex-Saints boss, with the head coach in question the last figure on the South Coast to have guided Southampton to the semi final stages of this much-adored competition.

The manager Eckert will be looking to emulate

The 33-year-old will surely be anticipating, now, that he's going to be occupying the Southampton job post for some time, with his early red-hot form in the hot seat making him an instant fan favourite.

He will want to, if he can, be the manager who consolidates Southampton as a Premier League regular once more, with Ralph Hasenhuttl one of the more memorable head coach faces from the Saints' consistent times in the top-flight.

The much-loved Austrian would guide the Saints to 60 wins, across four years in charge of the club, with one of those victories taking Southampton to the dizzy heights of the FA Cup semi-finals in 2021.

Unlike their underdog status against Arsenal, the Saints confidently brushed AFC Bournemouth with ease to make the last four, with a 3-0 win seeing reliable attacker Nathan Redmond grab a memorable brace and assist.

Hasenhuttl wouldn't be able to guide Southampton to a second FA Cup final - off the back of such an emphatic victory against the Cherries - to try and relive the glory days of 1976, but no manager since has got them to the semi-finals.

This is what Eckert will be striving to do on Easter Saturday, but a gritty win will do this time around, as Arsenal will be an extremely difficult opponent to get the better of.
