Tonda Eckert has been crowned Championship manager of the month for March, unsurprisingly.

It did feel like a shoo-in that the much-loved German was going to pick up another accolade from the St. Mary's dug-out, as he has steered the South Coast into the playoff positions, with a cool swagger.

The 5-1 win last time out against Wrexham is the standout result so far this April, as the mega-rich Red Dragons were swatted to one side with ease.

But the Saints also beat Coventry City, Norwich City, and Oxford United last month, in a month that could well have been challenging, facing sides occupying positions up and down the division.

Instead, as is typical with Eckert - who is ice-cold from the helm - everything was made to feel like a breeze, with the 33-year-old understandably delighted, as he now has back-to-back manager of the month awards on the mantelpiece.

Eckert's comments after winning Manager of the Month

Amazingly, despite such glowing form, Eckert isn't up for the overall Manager of the Season award in the Championship, to the bemusement of many.

Still, he will take the personal recognition when it arrives, as he commented on winning the honour, via the official Southampton website.

He said: "It is very pleasing for us to be winning this award again – this is recognition that we have been able to maintain our standards and consistency.

"We are on the right path, but the message is the same as it was in March. We are still far away from where we want to be. We have to keep pushing.”

These comments demonstrate how laser-focused Eckert remains on trying to seal promotion, as he wants his team to "keep pushing", despite all the acclaim coming their way, to instantly return to the Premier League.

Up next, John Eustace's playoff-challenging Derby County travel to St. Mary's, desperate for a win themselves, as they are currently three points behind the South Coast side, in the race to sneak into the top six.

History suggests that Southampton should be able to pick up a staggering sixth win in a row, despite the Rams being a stern test.

He should be able to beat Derby, as well

After all, after beating Wrexham 5-1, Southampton have zero teams to fear in the taxing division.

If their current form wasn't enough to suggest that they'll make light work of another playoff-chasing side, the recent head-to-head record between the two sides, also indicates that Southampton will be victorious on Saturday.

Indeed, across the last ten meetings between the two sides, Derby have only come out on top three times, with their latest win falling in 2019, as a penalty shootout handed the Rams an FA Cup success, at the expense of the Ralph Hasenhuttl-led Saints.

The last time the two outfits met in the Championship at St. Mary's was all the way back in 2012, when the Saints ripped the Rams to shreds 4-0.

On that day, despite boasting Rickie Lambert and Billy Sharp in their XI - who were known as two EFL goal machines - it would fall to defender Jos Hooiveld to break the deadlock, before the floodgates opened.

Eckert will be hopeful for another uncomplicated win on the weekend, to back up the heroics of the victory in Wales, as Southampton's promotion charge looks to pick up even more speed.
