Manchester United academy graduate makes the cut for Saints manager shortlist

Southampton have shortlisted Manchester United academy graduate and former midfielder Tom Cleverley among viable options to lead their young team.

Recently, Fabrizio Romano chipped in with a favourable update on Southampton's coaching target Will Still. The Saints have shown their fair resistance to pay Danny Rohl's release clause for quite some time now and thus, capturing Still's signature on a free is a proper no-brainer decision.

Honestly, Still's management credentials can't be downplayed but there is an undeniable fear of missing out on him as well.

And that risk will only increase in the next months as there will be no shortage of English roles for him in the immediate future. That being said, Southampton need a Plan B in their manager hunt.

Tom Cleverley provides hiring relief to Southampton

According to a new report from The Guardian, Manchester United's former academy graduate Tom Cleverley could well be that Will Still backup.

To begin with, Cleverley's nearly decade-long Manchester United association already speaks volumes of his football knowledge. After all, being part of the Red Devils last Premier League winning side is no small achievement.

Moving to Cleverley's coaching career, an encouraging stint at Watford is definitely eye-catching for the Championship heavyweights. Glancing at the current season standings, Cleverley has moved neck to neck with Danny Rohl which could tempt Southampton to actively pursue the former.

And the best part, there will hardly be much competition for Cleverley as opposed to the highly in-demand Still.

Safe to say, Southampton's scattergun approach throughout their coaching hire is paying off well. Rohl and Still remain the club's pick of the bunch and outside favourites like Cleverley offer the Saints a coaching luxury to choose from, which hasn't happened in recent years.

At this point, the ball is well and truly in Southampton's court and let's hope that they don't fumble it again like the Carlos Corberan mistake.
