Southampton pulled off the arguable shock of the weekend in the Championship by beating league leaders Coventry City on their own patch 2-1.
Much has been said about the Saints' recent unbeaten heroics, as they are now 13 wins down under the transformative reign of Tonda Eckert, but the table-topping Sky Blues were seeking out seven straight league victories when the South Coast visitors arrived at the CBS Arena.
Instead, they felt the unusual sting of a defeat, with Southampton continuing to breathe down the necks of Wrexham in that fierce fight for the final playoff position in the unpredictable division.
It was an extremely well-rounded display from the playoff-chasing Saints, throughout, with everyone playing their part tremendously, from Daniel Peretz making a huge five saves to keep the league leaders at bay, to 20-year-old Cameron Bragg controlling proceedings as a midfield anchor.
There was also another standout performance from Flynn Downes in the centre of the park, next to the inexperienced Bragg, as he initially fired Eckert's underdogs into the lead, just after the half-time interval.
Hitting 100 games in Saints red and white against Frank Lampard's hosts, it's a compelling argument to state that Downes is now filling the James Ward-Prowse void for the South Coast titans, as another classy servant of the club from the midfield ranks.
How Downes is turning into Southampton's next Ward-Prowse
Of course, Downes is still some way off hitting Ward-Prowse's legendary status at St. Mary's, with the 31-year-old icon going on to amass a staggering 410 appearances for the Saints.
He is also well-known for being one of the sharpest free-kick takers around, with a healthy chunk of his 55 goals for the club coming about from this deadball situation.
Downes hasn't quite been elevated to this entertaining status, just yet, but his passion for the club is very much evident, as he stuck by the South Coast side, even as the grim reality of relegation hit last season.
Having previously been on the books of West Ham United, he could well have fancied his chances at staying put in the Premier League with a new employer.
However, he instead opted to stick by the relegated club, and he is beginning to notch up memorable goals, like those before him, as seen in his opener against the Sky Blues.
Classily going about his business all season long with an 88% pass accuracy average, he will hope - if promotion is secured - that he could go on to cement himself as a Premier League regular, even as he begins to hit the latter stages of his career at 27 years of age.
Ward-Prowse came into his own during those latter stages of his career, to fill Downes with more confidence, as a season-best tally of ten goals in the Premier League came his way, at the exact same age the silky midfielder finds himself at now.
Already loved at St. Mary's, Downes can firm up his fan favourite status even more by sealing promotion, as Southampton enter into the business stages of the season full to the brim with confidence.
