After convincingly putting Millwall to the sword 5-1 last time out in Championship action, you wouldn't think being accurate in front of goal was one of Tonda Eckert and Co's issues, but it was coming up against Chris Davies' hosts.
The South Coast giants had 13 shots in the game, but only four of those would hit the target.
Cyle Larin, in particular, was letting the side down, after being so reliable this season so far, with only one on-target effort registered, away from being caught offside twice.
The wasteful visitors would be relieved at the final whistle that Birmingham were also having an off-night in front of goal, as Jay Stansfield squandered some gilt-edged opportunities.
In the end, Keven Schlotterbeck would be the unlikely goalscorer during the 1-1 draw, on only his second Saints outing, as he connected with a Leo Scienza corner kick emphatically.
But, there were more poor performers than good at St. Andrew's, leaving Eckert with a whole host of selection dilemmas to solve when Southampton travel to Lincoln City on Saturday lunchtime.

Larin dropped one of his worst performances to date in Saints red and white, which is saying a lot, as he's usually firing home the goals for fun.
Indeed, he has five goals next to his name this season, but he was off way those lofty standards in the Midlands.
With Divin Mubama his only real back-up, it will be interesting to see if the South Coast side regretting have such thin numbers up top, as Larin showed that he isn't superhuman every week.
Away from Larin, Tom Fellows was also out-of-sorts on his return to familiar soil, having been born near to Birmingham in Solihull.
The ex-West Bromwich Albion winger would manage just one measly shot at James Beadle's goal, on top of only registering 12 accurate passes.
It was also another up-and-down day at the office for Cameron Bragg, too, who is clearly talented, but perhaps shouldn't be starting every week as an unfinished senior product.
He ended up winning only two of his attempted seven duels, before being taken off around the hour mark.
It could be time for Eckert to finally start this star in the up-and-coming Scotsman's place, as the ace in question looked bright at St. Andrew's.

Crazily, Southampton managed to win James Ward-Prowse back during the hectic transfer window - which has just slammed shut - for an alleged £800k.
He is yet to start a game since returning, while Schlotterbeck has instantly slotted into Eckert's defence, but his first start could be forthcoming at Sincil Bank, with Bragg worthy of being dropped.
The 31-year-old very nearly scored for the Saints during his second-half runout, with two shots testing Beadle. His midfield counterpart did have one shot to shout about, but that effort was blocked, before the Blues keeper had to react.
Moreover, from his 29 minute cameo or thereabouts, Ward-Prowse managed to amass a key pass, while Bragg didn't. Additionally, he would win all 100% of his ground duels as a lively machine centrally.
Eckert does love putting his faith in the youth at his disposal, but it was clear that Southampton looked a lot brighter on their travels. when Ward-Prowse was introduced into the contest.
With Lincoln leaking three goals at home to Portsmouth recently, as well, he could be just the player needed to unlock the newly promoted side's defence.
If the match is cagey, the returning number 30 is also capable of a moment of magic from a free-kick, with more changes expected for this clash, you imagine, away from the legendary playmaker possibly replacing Bragg.
