Goalkeeper and Defenders

Angus Gunn, Goalkeeper – 8.5

Superb and put in a great performance in only his second game for Saints. Saves from Bernard and Lookman during the 90 minutes were crucial, but even more important was his stop to keep out Theo Walcott’s penalty in the shoot-out. Also bailed out Yoshida, who badly mishit a backpass shortly before the end of the game.

Alex McCarthy really has some quality competition on his hands.

Cedric, Right Wing-Back – 7

One of the five players to keep their place from the weekend’s loss at Wolves, and ti was good to see his motivation levels not dropping. Tough test against Bernard and Baines down the left but handled it well.

Also netted the winning spot-kick in the shoot-out with relative calmness in a tense atmosphere.

Jan Bednarek, Centre-Back – 6.5

Unlucky not to score with a powerful header that Stekelenburg had to tip over.

Solid enough but next minutes are likely to come against Leicester in the Fourth-Round.

Maya Yoshida, Centre-Back – 6.5

Captain for the evening and did okay as he looked to impress for a regular place in the side.

One shaky moment right at the end with a badly underhit backpass to Gunn, but luckily the young England shot-stopper was fast off his line.

Jack Stephens, Centre-Back – 6

Not bad from Stephens, who has also fallen behind other options at Centre-Back.

Was included in Premier League line-ups at the start of the campaign but well down the pecking order at the minute.

Matt Targett, Left Wing-Back – 7.5

Always reliable when brought in and didn’t disappoint here. Got through plenty of work down his flank.

Missed his penalty but cannot be blamed. Can only keep performing well when called upon by Mark Hughes.
