Goalkeeper and defenders

Alex McCarthy, Goalkeeper – 5.5

Anytime the opposing team nets three it’s a bad day for the keeper. To be fair, McCarthy didn’t have much of a chance for all three though. The first, was a one-on-one with Eden Hazard which is a matchup a brick wall would not even win. The second, was a simple tap-in from a cross that came across the face of goal and the third was another one-on-one scenario with Morata who dinked it over the English keeper when he went to ground.

Not a day McCarthy will look back on fondly.

Cedric, Right Wing-Back – 6.0

Nobody really enjoyed any sort of success today and Cedric is no exception. He was largely absent in the match today both on offense and defense and did not do anything exceptional but also nothing that was detrimental either. He did not get beat at the back post by a larger opponent so that is always a success.

Jan Bednarek, Centre-Back – 6.5

Bednarek got a rare start today and did not disappoint in his 45 mins of play. He made some key tackles in the box on shots by Hazard that would have been on frame and looked decent on the ball as well completing his passes at a high rate.

Hopefully this is the first of many starts for Bednarek as he looked like he could be a solid defender in this league.

Maya Yoshida, Centre-Back – 6.0

To the delight of many Saints fan Maya Yoshida returned to the starting lineup. Defensively, he was solid as always but his play on the ball was anything but. The Chelsea pressure seemed to be a bit much for the Japanese international as he looked unsure on the ball and his passes lacked sharpness. That was most likely due to it being his first Premier League minutes of the season and facing a formidable opponent.

Hope to see him get more opportunities moving forward.

Wesley Hoedt, Centre-Back – 6.0

Wesley Hoedt did not enjoy his day in the back line. Another shaky performance by the Dutchman and many fans are wondering why he is still included in the starting XI week in, week out. His decision making is questionable at best and it is really starting to take a toll on the players around him. Time for a change.

Ryan Bertrand, Left Wing-Back – 6.5

The captain had one of the better days out of all the Saints players. Whenever they did manage to get forward with the ball he was usually involved and it was his cross that gave Danny Ings the best chance at scoring today for the home team. He continues to be a consistent presence on the left side of the pitch and is a good choice as captain.

His yellow card for dissent was well worth it.
