The Saints are not new to losing their best players to the likes of Liverpool. The joke of Southampton being Liverpool’s ‘feeder’ club has run old but the phrase may continue to hold up.

It is no mystery that the strength of player for Southampton is their defense, and in some way, each of their original starting cast has been linked to a move.

Star left-back Ryan Bertrand was been linked to Chelsea earlier in the year. It is now being reported, however, that a move to Liverpool may be in the works now.

Saint’s fans have been saddened by the potential news of Virgil van Dijk verbally agreeing to Liverpool earlier in the day if they compete for Champions League football, but this may just be the final straw for those fans if they manage to sign both van Dijk and Bertrand.

Bertrand has played superbly this season, claiming himself as one of the best wing-defenders in the Premier League. He has made 24 starts this season for the Saints and is one of the most potent attacking threats while being a defender for Southampton.

Bertrand arrived at Southampton in 2015 from Chelsea for a £10-million fee. That seems to be a bargain now as a bid appears to be coming from several teams around the £22-million mark.

Liverpool are in the market for a left-back and apparently have made Bertrand a top priority for them to sign this upcoming transfer market. Jurgen Klopp has been forced to play James Milner in that position and has spoken highly of Bertrand.

If Liverpool were to somehow sign both van Dijk and Bertrand, their starting lineup would consist of six former Saints Players. This is the kind of recipe that the Saints will need to avoid if they want to continue to make the fan-base happy.

Although Liverpool have made it clear they want to sign Bertrand, it has also been reported that Chelsea is the clear-cut favorite to win the services of the English international. This is all speculating, however, that the Saints are willing to let go Bertrand to begin with.

This off-season campaign is crucial for the Saints with the speculation of a Claude Puel departure and so many players being linked to other teams. It will be interesting to see what moves happen and which ones fall through.
