Southampton target Henry Onyekuru rules out Celtic switch

Southampton have been handed a boost in their quest for young Nigerian Henry Onyekuru, as he rules out a move to the Scottish giants.

Transfer rumours surrounding the Saints have come and gone over the past weeks, but one that has persisted has been the club’s links with Henry Onyekuru.

Joint-top scorer in the Belgian First Division despite a tender age of 19, Onyekuru has been linked with teams all across Europe after he found the back net 23 times this season.

Southampton’s battle for the highly-rated Nigerian with see them clash with Premier League giants Arsenal, who have been credited with an interest in the versatile winger.

Despite not turning 20 until the summer Onyekuru already has nearly 50 league appearances to his name, have been a regular during Eupen’s promoted season in 2015/16 as well.

Belgian’s elite are naturally among those scouting the youngster due to the prospect of Champions League football, but one team who have seemingly been dealt a blow in their quest for the Nigerian are Celtic.

The Scottish Champions were reportedly keen to add the forward to their ranks after finishing the season undefeated, with several of their young talent linked with moves away themselves.

However Brendan Rodgers’ side will seemingly struggle to land their man, after his comments disregarded Scotland as a potential destination.

“I keep repeating the same as the past months: everything is possible. Anderlecht, Club Brugge or England. I have not decided yet.

“I am enjoying myself in Belgium. This competition is fun and I’m still learning things here, but I’ve always dreamed of the Premier League. We will see, though. I still have enough time to make a decision.
