After Southampton were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw with Swansea on Saturday, many could be forgiven for thinking it was a case of deja vu.

In actual fact, it was an incredibly good performance from the hosts, who racked up 29 shots in an attack-minded display.

Despite registering just two shots on target, it was impressive to say the least, and Mauricio Pellegrino will be happy with what he saw in his first competitive game in charge of the Saints.

Swansea were poor on the day, albeit without their talisman Gylfi Sigurdsson, and ought to have lost – had Southampton had their shooting boots on.

Although young English gem Tammy Abraham missed a glorious opportunity for the visitors in the first half, they struggled to create any more clear-cut chances, and did not hit the target all afternoon.

Swans fans were understandably let down by the performance, however a point away from home in the Premier League is a good result for a side that struggled last time out.

I sat down with Harrison Read, a life-long Swansea fan who was at the game, to see what he made of the league opener.

More from Saints Marching

"“I was more than happy with a point, we didn’t get a foothold in the game, and they hit the cross bar. Although Tammy missed a great chance we didn’t show up, so I cant not be happy leaving with a point.”"

Southampton fans were unable to see new signing Mario Lemina set foot on the pitch on Saturday, as he was an unused substitute by Pellegrino.

Harrison feels Saints were missing a spark in the midfield, which Lemina could have provided.

"He said: “They played well but I think they’re still missing something to score goals, possibly an attacking centre midfielder who could have changed the game.“Defensively Southampton were outstanding, they weren’t letting anything through all afternoon.“I think van Dijk should now be sold, Jack Stephens has proved he is ready for the big time. They should cash in on a player who doesn’t want to be there.”"

Saints fans will be disappointed with a point, but will be excited with what they saw. There is a long way to go in what will be a topsy-turvy campaign.

Next up for Pellegrino’s men is a clash against West Ham – which has been moved from the London Stadium to St. Mary’s. Kick-off is 3:00 PM this coming Saturday.
