Goalkeeper and defenders

7. Forster did what was required of him with two crucial saves from Christian Benteke and Jason Puncheon’s efforts either side of half-time. It was a performance Forster needed after conceding two goals against Watford last week; hopefully he can string more performances like this.. Goalkeeper. Southampton. FRASER FORSTER

6. Did what was expected of the left-back. Bertrand made some simple errors like misplacing a pass but the defensive shape of the Saints helped him in this game. Like Cedric, the Englishman put in a slight-above average performance.. Left-Back. Southampton. RYAN BERTRAND

6.5. Yoshida has started off this season just like he finished last season. Although the defensive shape did help the centre-back, 29-year-old dealt with Christian Benteke well and it’s good for him that his team kept a clean sheet. However, van Dijk’s potential inclusion into the starting XI may see him dropped on the bench.. Centre-Back. Southampton. MAYA YOSHIDA

Not only did the recent signing show his defensive skills, Hoedt has a great passing range on him. Multiple times we saw the Dutchman spread the ball out to Redmond who could then start a counter attack. Despite Yoshida’s experience, Hoedt’s place in the team shouldn’t be under threat.. Centre-Back. Southampton. WESLEY HOEDT. 7

Southampton. CEDRIC SOARES. 6. A solid performance from the right-back, Cedric had to deal with Palace’s quick left-hand wing involving Andros Townsend and Jeffrey Schlupp. Cedric found himself in a good position late in the game to put the cherry on top of the cake but couldn’t take the chance.. Right-Back
