The Northern Ireland international has been pivotal this season due to his leadership qualities – captaining the side in every Premier League game so far.

This has been the case since January, taking the captain’s armband due to the absence of Virgil van Dijk – injury and a recent transfer saga with Saints being the reason.

Davis has taken to the role with ease though. Experienced as he has captained Northern Ireland from past to present, with Uruguay in 2006 being the first occasion.

For the sake of Saints, it has been fortunate that Davis has had this experience. It is clear that there is a lack of leadership amongst the rest of the squad. Therefore a lack of organisation would be a problem, though there have already been cases this season.

Maya Yoshida and Shane Long have captained in cup games last season. But have not made good of their opportunities, with poor performances and losses being the result.

So far this campaign Davis has been suited to a attacking midfield role under Pellegrino. This is thanks to his great ball retention and ability to press opposing defensive players.

However he lacks physicality to play in a deeper role. This is proven with his performance against Watford.

Despite that, the Saints captain has had a decent start to the campaign. Winning a penalty against West Ham, as well as capping his 200th club appearance with a goal against Crystal Palace. He was also nominated for ‘Player of the Month’ for August.

On paper, Davis is too essential to be dropped from the starting line-up. This even with the return of former captain Van Dijk. Having both players will aid in keeping the team organised, and therefore a cohesive defensive unit.
