Goalkeeper and Defenders

4. Unsighted for the first Newcastle goal and not helped by poor defending, but he really shouldn’t have been beaten by Ayoze Perez for their second. Really lacking confidence, but has been for the past year and nothing has been done about it. A problem that quickly needs sorting.. Goalkeeper. Southampton. FRASER FORSTER

6. Solid if unremarkable, but didn’t have the space to fly into like he normally does. Saints’ attacks often ended with hopeful crosses from either full back as they lacked players centrally to link the play. Cedric is important to the way that the team plays and will continue to be when Pellegrino finds the right system to help his players create.. Right-Back. Southampton. CEDRIC SOARES

Southampton. MAYA YOSHIDA. 6. A busy performance from the afternoon’s captain. Seems to play for the shirt, and that’s why Saints fans have taken to him so much. Him and Hoedt will battle it out for a starting place but Yoshida certainly hasn’t done a lot wrong in recent times.. Centre-Back

Caught out of position in the build up to Newcastle’s first goal, but otherwise very solid with some good blocks and clearances. Did seem to stroll around at times and motivation will become a problem if the team doesn’t buck up its ideas.. Centre-Back. Southampton. VIRGIL VAN DIJK. 7

6. Like Cedric, Bertrand struggled to find space to attack. A couple of times he forced his way forward and produced some dangerous crosses, but he was just one of Saints’ players that didn’t seem able to express himself fully. Too much of Saints’ play hasn’t seemed natural this season, and players like Bertrand will only be able to show their true colours when the team finds its identity again.. Left-Back. Southampton. RYAN BERTRAND
