Midfielders

Romeu worked well without being spectacular. He shielded the ball well and won a few challenges, and was important in keeping attacks flowing through the midfield. The Spaniard has built a good partnership with Mario Lemina in recent weeks, and Lemina’s bursting runs forward were perhaps missed.. Defensive-Midfield. Southampton. ORIOL ROMEU. 6

Brought in to replace the injured Lemina, and had a decent game in the centre of the park. His excellent free-kick struck the post early on and, although he was unlucky not to score, Steven Davis followed  up to head home. Will always be a danger from set-pieces, but needs to work on other aspects of his game to become a mainstay in the team. He lost a couple of challenges in midfield that could have been costly on another day.. Centre-Midfield. Southampton. JAMES WARD-PROWSE. 7

Got Saints’ goal when he followed up Ward-Prowse’s free-kick after 7 minutes. Showed his normal energy and ball-carrying abilities throughout the game, and he’s still a very important player for the club because of that. Scored the early winner at Crystal Palace and his goal could have been important here too had Saints not completely taken their foot off the gas after going ahead.. Centre-Midfield. Southampton. STEVEN DAVIS. 7
