Southampton have been seriously lacking goals this season. Did you know? So far this campaign they’ve managed to score a measly nine goals on the Premier League.

Mauricio Pellegrino hasn’t managed to rectify the problems that tainted Claude Puel’s tenure last season. The most irritating to the St, Mary’s faithful is the lack of goals scored. Southampton used to be seen as a club who played attacking football, that’s now seemingly not the case.

Manolo Gabbiadini is currently the top scorer at the club with three goals in the league, those coming against West Ham and Newcastle (2) at home. Despite this low tally, it is a respectable amount considering the service the Italian international has received.

Over the last few years, Saints have had a plethora of goalscorers in their ranks, from the likes club legend Rickie Lambert & Graziano Pelle to James Beattie, Kevin Phillips and even Stern John!

I’ve had a look at former Saints strikers who currently still ply their trade in the professional English leagues to see who, if any are outscoring our current top scorer.

Guess what? There’s four!

Peter Crouch – Stoke City (4 Goals)

The 6ft 7” former/future? England international has already bagged four Premier League goals this season, scoring what proved to be the winner against Southampton in Stoke’s 2-1 Home win earlier in the season.

At the ripe old age of 36 he’s still proving he’s got what it takes to get goals at the top level. All this despite playing a very limited number of minutes for the Potters. Even talks of an World Cup recall have surfaced in recent weeks!

More from Saints Marching

David McGoldrick – Ipswich Town (5 Goals)

The Republic Of Ireland international has bagged five goals this season for Championship outfit Ipswich. Despite struggling to settle at any of his clubs since he left Southampton in 2009, he seems to have found comfort at least at Ipswich Town, his blistering start to the season contributing to a good start for Mick McCarthy’s side.

Billy Sharp – Sheffield United (6 Goals)

A much-liked player even still down on the south coast, Billy Sharp’s stay at Southampton always seemed cut short from a fans point of view.

He contributed massively to the clubs promotion to the Premier League and never really got his chance at the big time. He is now helping Sheffield United rocket their way through the leagues and has already netted sic goals as The Blades sit near the top of the table in the Championship.

Olufela Olomola – Yeovil Town (7 Goals)

Technically still on the Southampton books, but on-loan at Yeovil and he has taken to life in League 2 well. Scoring seven goals for the West Country side steering them clear of the relegation zone so far this campaign. May have a future at Southampton if he keeps this record going, only time will tell.

So with Olomola topping the list at seven goals this season, is he already out of reach for Gabbiadini and co,?
