Goalkeepers and defenders

Had nothing to do for large parts of the game, cannot be blamed for the goal. Saved a second attempt from Sigurdsson & held anything that was thrown at him. Solid performance, not noteworthy, through no fault of his own.. Goalkeeper. Southampton. FRASER FORSTER. 6.5

Left-back. Southampton. RYAN BERTRAND. 6.5. Bombed up and down the wing, defensively solid. Formed a nice little partnership with Boufal throughout the game and a constant threat. Also seemed more focussed and dare I say it, happy!

CEDRIC SOARES. 7. Another solid performance from the severely underrated Portuguese defender. Dealt with the threat down his side of the pitch comfortably, seemed to relish having the dependability of Prowse ahead of him.. Right-back. Southampton

Southampton. VIRGIL VAN DIJK. 6.5. Won nearly every header in the defensive half this afternoon. Threatened in the opposition area and kept the ball moving across the back four. Not a stellar performance from the Dutchman but did exactly what was required.. Centre-back

7. Defensively sound, played some screaming passes across the pitch to Cedric & Tadic. Did everything that was asked of him against the pace of Mirallas and co. Cool, calm, collective.. Centre-back. Southampton. WESLEY HOEDT
