Virgil van Dijk

Including a defender when the Saints conceded four seems a bit of a weird move, but without VVD it could’ve been a few more.

Maya Yoshida – who was the surprise inclusion ahead of Wesley Hoedt – had to be saved more than once by Van Dijk, who enjoyed a fairly respectable evening on the south coast.

There have been questions regarding his work ethic since he re-joined the starting XI and they were apparent again yesterday – at times he didn’t really look like he wanted to be there.

However, at the end of the day, he enjoyed one of the best evenings of those in red and white, although that admittedly didn’t take a whole lot based on the performances of Dusan Tadic and Steven Davis.
