Southampton: Saints interested in Spartak winger Quincy Promes
By Chris Hughes
Southampton are reportedly interested in the Dutch international, in a bid to add attacking reinforcement to a team starved on fresh talent.
You have no idea what’s going on behind the scenes, but despite that it’s hard not to get annoyed as we come to the end of the third week of January without any new signings.
Theo Walcott was the only transfer target that the Saints were openly chasing, but the England international rejected a return to his boyhood club in favour of a move to Everton.
Now however, Sky Sports are reporting that Southampton are keen on 26-year-old winger Quincy Promes. The pacey, direct forward currently plies his trade in Russia, for Spartak Mosow.
Sky’s report on the rumour suggested that the Dutchman is keen on a move to England and the Premier League, giving the Saints better chance of landing the winger.
Whilst reports vary, Promes’ going valuation seems to be around the £30 million mark, with Spartak naturally looking to make a profit on their £15 million investment from three and a half years ago.

Therefore any deal bringing the 26-year-old to the south coast would be a record transfer for the Saints, however it would also be serious statement of intent from the Southampton board, who have come under increased scrutiny as of late.

Promes has scored at least ten league goals in each season since his breakout loan spell with the Go Ahead Eagles in the 2012/13 campaign. For his career, he’s averaged a goal every other game, despite being naturally deployed down the right side.
The Spartak man’s current deal with the Russian outfit has three and a half years remaining on it, meaning the Saints shouldn’t have to pay a premium to buy out a long contract.
Whilst the initial deal would be more costly than the proposed move for Walcott, Promes’ wages would probably be lower if he were to move to the Saints, whilst he is also less-injury prone with age on his side.
Therefore – whilst these are only whispers – a deal for the Dutchman seems like it’d be much better value for money than a move to the now-Everton man.
Whatever the truth behind the rumours, Southampton supporters will want to see some kind of movement from the club before too long.
