Southampton 1-1 Tottenham: Match recap
After a 1-1 draw with Tottenham, Southampton remained in the bottom three of the Premier League after Stoke’s victory over Huddersfield on Saturday.
A Davinson Sanchez own goal and Harry Kane header were separated by just three minutes as a draw seemed to be the fair result at the end.
Saints made a positive start to the match with intensity and intent and so taking the lead on 15 minutes, despite the goal being rather lucky, was well deserved.
A low cross from Ryan Bertrand was, rather unnecessarily too, intercepted by Spurs center-back Davinson Sanchez but past interim keeper Michel Vorm in goal.
However, like many leads this season, Saints gave their advantage away rather easily as Spurs’ star man Harry Kane nodded a header past Alex McCarthy directly from a corner just three minutes after the hosts took the lead.
Chances were rather at a minimum for both sides in the rest of the first half as both keepers had to make one or two relatively simple saves but, despite keeping most of the ball, Spurs didn’t really dominate.

After the interval, the game didn’t really liven up too much as neither side seemed to have much intent on taking the advantage.
Whilst Dele Alli and Erik Lamela missed good chances, Saints could’ve nicked it right at the death through 17-year-old debutant Michael Obafemi, who was a surprise selection due to Shane Long’s illness, but Tadic’s low cross couldn’t find the youngster.
Overall, it’s a very good point for us as Spurs have been in brilliant form and, without a doubt, will be challenging for the top four throughout the season. Unfortunately for us right now, it doesn’t change our current situation and you could say that Saints should’ve tried harder to win as three points would’ve seen Saints go up to 14th and end a 10-game win less streak in the league.
On a positive note though, the players showed a lot more intent than of late and did play for Pellegrino. Hopefully, this result acts a morale boost ahead of our FA Cup tie on Saturday and league game with Brighton a week on Wednesday.
With the possibility of both Quincy Promes and Guido Carrillo coming in this week, we could be in a much better situation with wins over Watford and Brighton in the next two games as well as a result at fellow strugglers West Brom in a few weeks could really put us back in shape!
