Goalkeeper and Defenders

Southampton. ALEX MCCARTHY. 9. Brilliant performance from McCarthy. He made a number of great saves, including a tip wide from a Jay Rodriguez shot, a claw off the line from Ahmed Hegazi’s header and a quick reaction a deflected Grzegorz Krychowiak shot. He also claimed and punched the ball well out of his goal, which was vital against the numerous crosses that West Brom produced. McCarthy’s form and presence behind the defence could be the difference between relief and heartbreak for Saints come the end of the season.. Goalkeeper

6. Fairly quiet afternoon from Cedric. He was always an option when Saints looked to stretch play, but couldn’t produce his usual high quality from crosses. He managed to stem the threat of James McClean and his dangerous balls into the box, but struggled when isolated against West Brom’s much taller aerial threats.. Right-Back. Southampton. CEDRIC SOARES

Centre-Back. Southampton. JACK STEPHENS. 7. Despite a recent run of three goals in three games, Stephens has been exposed defensively with slack marking and loss of aerial duels. However, he was back to his confident best in this match and dealt with everything that came his way with relative ease. It’s important that he keeps this form for the rest of the season and continues his promising development so far.

7. Hoedt scored Southampton’s first goal of the game and his first strike for the club with a well taken volley after 11 minutes. His range of passing was good again, and he regularly tried to stretch play to the full-backs or snap passes into Guido Carrillo. Like against Liverpool however, a small lapse in concentration almost cost his side another goal. This time his missed clearance let Jay Rodriguez in, but thankfully Alex McCarthy saved well.. Centre-Back. Southampton. WESLEY HOEDT

5. Bertrand once was once again given the captains armband, but would have a pretty uneventful afternoon. His only main contribution was an important one though as he headed a Solomon Rondon header off the line in the second-half.. Left-Back. Southampton. RYAN BERTRAND
