McCarthy had one of the better games of any Saints player, with the English stopper not really being at fault for Newcastle’s three goals – granted he could’ve maybe done better with Matt Ritchie’s, but at least we aren’t authors of our own misfortune like with Fraser Forster. Ryan Betrand took the captain’s armband for the fixture as he has done previously but in truth had a mediocre game down the left – he tried to create but the majority of his crosses were inaccurate and considering Carrillo should be the target, were mostly over him and to the far post.. 5.5. Jack Stephens, much like the rest of the Saints defence, had a sub-standard afternoon. He lost a lot of aerial duels against Newcastle’s attackers and as a result they were able to dominate on the offensive front.. Centre-back. Southampton. JACK STEPHENS

Despite his height, the Dutch defender was relatively weak in the air but it’s arguable that Hoedt had a better than Stephens. With that being said, he also picked up a yellow card like Stephens did, which takes both of their tallies up to five.. Centre-back. Southampton. WESLEY HOEDT. 6

Cedric had, in my opinion, a particularly poor game for the Saints – his crosses were always over the head of Carrillo and his link-up play with JWP was unnaturally poor. Kenedy had a field day down the wing and Cedric was partly at fault for that too.. Right-back. Southampton. CEDRIC SOARES. 4.5
