Southampton: Saints linked with move for Huddersfield’s Wagner
By Chris Hughes
With Mark Hughes only contracted until the end of the season, Southampton have already been linked with a new manager in David Wagner.
Granted, the Welshman may stay beyond the summer especially if he keeps the Saints afloat, but the general consensus come season’s end is that the club will look for a manager who fits the bill a bit more.
One of these managers is arguably Huddersfield boss David Wagner, and the Sun yesterday credited the Saints with an interest in the German. The tabloid aren’t always the most reliable source but on the base of it, it seems like a solid appointment.
The 46-year-old Wagner has worked wonders with the Terriers in getting them to the Premier League in the first place but they currently sit three points and three places above the Saints with the season nearing it’s conclusion.
However according to the report, sources have suggested that Wagner will look to leave Huddersfield even if he keeps them up, and apparently wouldn’t say no to staying in the Premier League.

Wagner penned a new, two-year deal just last summer but has only been the Terriers’ head coach for three years, meaning he may be tempted to move on especially if Southampton are willing to back him financially in the summer.

Despite Huddersfield being goal-shy on the face of it, they have played some good football this season during their brighter periods despite having arguably one of the weaker squads in the league.
Aside from Aaron Mooy in the middle of the park, the Terriers don’t have a huge amount of players who would walk into the Saints’ starting XI, despite their superior league position.
This only shows Wagner’s potential has a manager especially at just 46-year-old. He already has nearly seven years of managerial experience and could be a solid appointment for the Saints.
However it remains unclear as to whether there is any truth in the rumour, especially considering the source.
However, it is believable that the German may look to move on this summer, and if he does then Southampton should definitely consider approaching the Yorkshire club.
