Strikers and Substitutes

6. His work-rate for the cause can’t be questioned in the time he has been back in the side, but here it was a poor first touch that let him down badly. Wesley Hoedt’s ball forward was dummied by Austin and Long found himself with just Caballero to beat. He elected to try and round the keeper but a horribly heavy touch saw the ball fly out of play before his could reach it again. Did well with most of the direct play that came his way from Saints defenders but it will be this moment that is remembered.. Striker. Southampton. SHANE LONG

6. Brought into play alongside Long in a two pronged attack and to provide his predatory scoring instincts. He had a quiet game with little service until the final 15 minutes when a low cross found him at the back post, and his shot on the slide cannoned back off the post. Another close effort came when he ran across the front post and met a cross but flicked wide. He must play from now on if Saints are going to get the goals they need in the final league games.. Striker. Southampton. CHARLIE AUSTIN

6. Came on with Redmond as Saints reverted to the wide midfield that they had played with for the recent run of games. Showed some good touches and played a few dangerous balls into the box for Austin to get onto, but equally hit the first man with the majority of his late corners.. 1st Substitute. Southampton. DUSAN TADIC

7. Looked very bright and determined to make an impact, and so nearly scored to get Saints back in the game. He seized upon a loose ball just outside the box and snapped in a fierce low shot that Caballero somehow parried wide. His pace is a worry for most defences and he staked a good claim to start against Bournemouth.. 2nd Substitute. Southampton. NATHAN REDMOND

MANOLO GABBIADINI. 6. On for Bednarek as Saints sacrificed a defender for an attack with 12 minutes left but struggled to get involved with most late attacks breaking down before getting towards the Chelsea box.. 3rd Substitute. Southampton
