Southampton: Saints to move for England youth pair?
By Marc Walker
Southampton have today been mentioned as suitors for two of England’s brightest youth prospects this summer.
According to the Mirror, Southampton have shown an interest in both Everton’s Ademola Lookman and Norwich City’s James Maddison and have joined a host of clubs pursuing both.
Both players showcased their exceptional talents last season and could find the focus on youth at St Mary’s helps to take them to the next level and regular Premier League football.
Lookman was on loan at RB Leipzig from Everton for the second half of 2017/18 and managed some impressive displays despite his tender years. His 28 appearances yielded eight goals and four assists, and the 20-year-old would certainly provide an exciting addition to the Saints attack.
Maddison was the star at Norwich last campaign and claimed 15 goals and 11 assists from attacking midfield. A key weapon of his is also pinpoint set-piece delivery from both free-kicks and corners.

It is understood, however, that there would be fierce competition and a number of clubs for the signatures of both players over the summer transfer window.
The form of Maddison in particular has attracted the attention of Man City, Liverpool, Spurs and Fulham. He is recovering from a long-term knee injury but could be fit for the start of 2018/19.
Lookman’s spell in the Bundesliga has reportedly seen Leipzig seeking a permanent transfer but he also has interest from Tottenham Hotspur if he wants to return to England .
The Saints board would likely have break or get near the current club record transfer of £18m to bring either player through the door with the level of competition likely to drive prices up.
The team are in desperate need of players such as these after two drab seasons in front of goal. Creativity and attacking influence was lacking under both Claude Puel and Mauricio Pellegrino and the club will be looking to change that for Mark Hughes’ tenure.
After a fairly dry spell of first-team quality talent coming through their famous academy, these rumours seem to show the club still looking to recruit young, hungry English talent. This has been a key part for the fans too and will please them after a poor last season.
