Southampton defenders Maya Yoshida and Jan Bednarek were both involved at the World Cup this afternoon as their respective campaigns got underway.

Yoshida’s Japan were in action first in their clash with Colombia, and they were certainly the  underdogs going into the match.

However, an intelligent display from the team as a whole saw them come out on top at full-time with a crucial 2-1 win, and Yoshida would be on the pitch for the full 90 minutes.

An early penalty award had seen Colombia reduced to 10 men, and Borussia Dortmund’s Shinji Kagawa converted the spot-kick to give his side the lead.

Juan Quintero’s clever free-kick then levelled the game, but a 73rd minute header from Yuya Osako gave Japan a deserved win.

Jan Bednarek would unfortunately experience World Cup defeat with Poland at the hands of Senegal by a scoreline of 2-1.

Bednarek himself started the game on the bench but came on at the beginning of the second-half, and was immediately in the thick of the action.

A minute after coming on, he collided with another player when defending and looked potentially injured. Thankfully, he was okay to carry on and help his side back into the contest.

An own goal from Poland’s Cionek had given Senegal a half-time lead, and then forward Niang doubled their advantage on the hour.

A late header from Krychowiak gave the Polish some hope but they ultimately would have too much to do and from their opening match with nothing.

Yoshida will hope to be involved again in Japan’s second group-stage game with Senegal on Sunday, whilst Bednarek and Poland will want a more positive result when they face Colombia on the same day.
