Southampton: Saints close on Manchester City’s Angus Gunn
By Marc Walker
Southampton are close to agreeing a permanent deal to sign £15m rated goalkeeper Angus Gunn from Premier League champions Manchester City.
According to BBC reporter Simon Stone, the England youth international had interest from other teams looking to sign him, but Southampton are looking likely to win the race.
Gunn spent the 2017/18 season on-loan at Championship side Norwich City and impressed in his time there; keeping 16 clean sheets in 51 matches in all competitions.
The 22-year-old will be brought in to provide competition to current number 1 Alex McCarthy, with Fraser Forster out of favour and not looking likely to play a big part for Mark Hughes’ side.
Saints also released last season’s third-choice keeper Stuart Taylor at the end of his contract on July 1st, and he left without playing a game at St Mary’s.

Gunn is highly rated and said to have a big future in the game, and has played 11 times for England’s Under-21s since 2015.
Overall, a resumption of the goalkeeping situation will help create a strong competitive nature in the team, and make sure that the team has young goalkeepers ready for the future.
23-year-old shot stopper Jack Rose is currently at Saints and signed a new deal with the club recently, meaning he and Gunn with push behind McCarthy if Forster is to leave this summer.
Saints also reportedly agreed an £18m deal to sign Borussia Mochengladbach Centre-Back Jannik Vestergaard, and he was due to have a medical today ahead of the move.
If Gunn and Vestergaard are to arrive at Saints, they will follow Stuart Armstrong and Mohamed Elyounoussi through the door and become the third and fourth summer signings at St Mary’s.
This recruitment drive will give the team the best chance of avoiding another season like 2017/18, where they narrowly avoided relegation from the English top-flight.
