Southampton: Could Andre Schurrle be another option for the Saints?
By Chris Hughes
After Dortmund’s friendly win over Manchester City in America last night, a spokesperson from the former has confirmed that Andre Schurrle is set to leave BVB.
The club tweeted to confirm that he is in discussion with another club, with many believing that could be Crystal Palace, with Wilfried Zaha strongly linked with a move away, with Dortmund interestingly one of the linked parties for the Ivorian international.
However if the deal with the London side isn’t actually happening, or that it least falls apart, would the German be a smart addition to Southampton’s squad?
During his time with Chelsea back in 2013, Schurrle proved to be an effective player off the bench, scoring as regularly as once every 160 minutes across his 18 months in the capital. Now 27, he is a versatile and quick attacker, most-natural down the left but also comfortable up-front or down the right flank.
The Saints will almost certainly be looking for a new forward following the loan of Sofiane Boufal to Celta Vigo yesterday night and whilst other options could prove cheaper and more effective, a move for the German shouldn’t be totally discounted.

Schurrle’s stock has dropped following a pretty tough two seasons with Dortmund, but previously he was a consistent goalscorer wherever he played – somewhat of a complete winger, he has nearly tallied up as many assists in the Bundesliga as he has goals, something often forgotten from his game.

All three of the German’s past transfers have been in-excess of £20 million however, and it remains unclear as to whether we would want the club to spend such a fee on someone who has just managed one goal all campaign. He may not be worth as much as he once was, but BVB would almost certainly want to recoup the majority of their £27 million outlay from 2016.
However, if a cheaper deal is on the cards – perhaps in the region of £10-15 million, then it makes sense for all parties involved.
Whilst Crystal Palace would naturally offer the better location for a footballer to live, Southampton would almost certainly offer a better standard of football, something which would allow the 27-year-old’s creativity to flourish.
Wages would of course be a talking point as it’s safe to assume he’s on a respectable amount at a side like Dortmund, but as the Saints begin to sign players for larger fees, it’s safe to assume their monthly outlay is rising as well.
All in all there a definitely better options on the market – Filip Kostic remains a real possibility in my mind but with the Serbian being naturally left-sided like Schurrle and Elyounoussi, the club may instead need to look at someone who can play on the right.
However, if Schurrle’s potential move to whatever club he is in talks with fails, and the Saints can’t succeed with any other targets, then a move for the German would be a perfectly viable back-up.
