Alex McCarthy

When Southampton spent £13.5 million on Angus Gunn last month, many Southampton supporters expected the young Englishman to step into the side’s first XI ahead of Alex McCarthy, despite the efforts from the latter towards the end of last season.

However yesterday, McCarthy showed exactly why the Saints’ supporters value him so highly, and he was arguably Man of the Match for his efforts against the Clarets.

The 28-year-old made six saves from six shots faced, with all bar one of those coming from inside the box. He kept the Saints in the game at times, as Burnley did enjoy some good spells with both Johann Berg Gudmundsson and Chris Wood both testing the goalkeeper.

With Gunn showing his potential in pre-season and last year whilst on loan at Norwich, and with McCarthy doing so well against Burnley yesterday, it seems like Southampton’s goalkeeping problems of old are well and truly gone.
