Jannik Vestergaard

All four of the Southampton players who made their debuts impressed yesterday, but Vestergaard was the player who not only played the duration, but played the best.

At the back, alongside Hoedt and Stephens who also enjoyed good games, the Dane showed great leadership and aerial presence – he also made 12 clearances, the most of any Southampton player and only bettered by James Tarkowski’s 15.

Some skeptics thought that Vestergaard’s lack of natural pace in the modern game would see him struggle to adapt to the speed of the Premier League, but yesterday gave those critics reason to believe they were wrong.

Although it’s only been one match, the 26-year-old gave Southampton supporters reason to think that their club have got a really talented defender on their hands.
