Plenty of new faces

Mark Hughes rotated the side heavily for the match with the Seagulls, handing Angus Gunn his Saints debut whilst Matt Targett, Jan Bednarek and Steven Davis all came in for their first starts of the campaign.

Whilst the supporters didn’t get a chance to see the likes of Jake Hesketh or Michael Obafemi getting some minutes as neither made the matchday squad, the Saints did hand a first competitive appearance to Sam Gallagher in well over two years, and the English forward was impressive working in a two-man strikeforce.

At the back the new-look defence was second to most aerial duels but they showed potential to be able to come into the first-team with Wesley Hoedt inconsistent at best.

Gunn meanwhile looked the real deal in goal, keeping a clean sheet at the first attempt and doing well when called upon throughout the duration.

All in all, Mark Hughes will have a bit of a selection headache going into the weekend’s clash with Crystal Palace.
