Southampton have been handed a tough trip in the Carabao Cup Third-Round after being drawn away to fellow Premier League club Everton.

Saints reached this stage after securing a 1-0 win over Brighton on Tuesday thanks to Charlie Austin’s 87th minute header, and they must now pass a stern test from the Toffees if they are to advance further in the competition.

The exact date for the tie is yet to be confirmed, but it is due to be played during the week commencing the 24th September.

The two sides have already played each other in the Premier League at Goodison Park this season and the game ended in a 2-1 victory for Marco Silva’s side.

Mark Hughes has stated that he wants to take the cup competitions seriously and he will potentially need to have his best players to call upon to reach the Fourth-Round stage.

More from Saints Marching

An improvement on last season’s performance in the Carabao Cup has been made by Saints who were knocked out by Wolves in the Second-Round.

It was the 2016/17 campaign that saw their best cup run in recent times as they reached the League Cup final at Wembley, although they were unlucky to be beaten 3-2 by Manchester United.

Premier League clubs are known for fielding weakened teams in the early rounds, and it could prove to be to Southampton’s advantage when the tie comes around.

Mark Hughes also made 10 changes against Brighton, but the team still had a good look to it and a solid enough performance gave them their first win of the 2018/19 season.

However, the competition is unlikely to yield many opportunities for young players with Saints having loaned out Harrison Reed, Sam McQueen, Jake Hesketh and Jake Flannigan in the past week.

Exceptions to this are Sam Gallagher and Matt Targett, who it seems will have roles to play in the squad at St Mary’s this campaign.
