Southampton: Saints looking to sort poor Monday record
By Marc Walker
Southampton will need to put right their poor recent record when playing on a Monday if they are to get a positive result against Brighton.
The two sides clash at St Mary’s in three days time in an intriguing contest and the Seagulls will feel they have a decent opportunity considering Southampton’s strange problem.
Since returning to the Premier League, the Saints have played six times on a Monday and only picked up two points from a possible 18.
Losses against West Brom, Manchester United, West Ham and Everton have come, with draws against Aston Villa and Everton again being the only positive results since 2012
Saints’ Monday results since 2012
Monday 5th November 2012 – West Brom 2-0 SAINTS
Monday 21st January 2013 – SAINTS 0-0 Everton
Monday 24th November 2014 – Aston Villa 1-1 SAINTS
Monday 8th December 2014 – SAINTS 1-2 Manchester United
Monday 28th December 2015 – West Ham 2-1 SAINTS
Monday 2nd January 2017 – Everton 3-0 SAINTS

Perhaps the most significant game from this list is the 0-0 draw with Everton in 2013. The game marked the beginning of Mauricio Pochettino’s tenure at St Mary’s and got Saints fans believing that their side would avoid relegation in their first season back in the top-flight.
The following season also saw a key moment on a Monday. Newly appointed manager Ronald Koeman had led his side to 11 wins from their first 14 games of the campaign, but a draw against Aston Villa saw them follow with five consecutively losses.
Indeed, the 2011/12 season saw Saints and Brighton meet on the first day of a week. The 2nd January 2012 saw Nigel Adkins side well placed at the top of the table, but they would lose 3-0 at the AMEX stadium and have talisman Rickie Lambert sent off.
Whilst records like this will not particularly concern the current side and boss Mark Hughes, a win this Monday could see them continue a positive start to the season and get a first win in front of their home crowd.
