Southampton currently have a number of high-profile players out on-loan at other clubs after not being able to offer them first-team football at St Mary’s.

The summer transfer window saw both incomings and outgoings as Mark Hughes started to shape his Southampton squad ahead of his first season in permanent charge of the side.

A mix of younger players and more experienced members eventually went out to other clubs, so how are they all getting on away from the South Coast?

Sofiane Boufal was one of the high-profile players to be shipped out in the summer as he joined La Liga side Celta Vigo on a season-long loan deal. It has been a successful start to his time in Spain too.

In six mainly substitute appearances so far, he has managed to bag two goals and one assist with a main highlight being his goal at the weekend against Sevilla; a typically mazy run from the halfway line ended with a delightful, curled effort from the edge of the area that left the goalkeeper with no chance.

More from Saints Marching

Striker Guido Carrillo joined former Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino at fellow La Liga outfit Leganes for the 2018/19 campaign too.

After failing to register a goal for his parent club in his short time in England, he has managed to score twice in seven matches in Spain. One of those goals came at the Bernabeu against Real Madrid, and Leganes managed to humble giants Barcelona by 2-1 in September.

Familiar surroundings called for Jordy Clasie in the summer as he re-joined Feyenoord after becoming a fans favourite the last time he was at De Kuip.

The 27-year-old has made himself a first-team regular again this time around and has already racked up 11 appearances for the team he joined as a boy.

Saints youth products Harrison Reed and Sam McQueen joined Championship sides Blackburn Rovers and Middlesbrough respectively after not being given significant roles within Mark Hughes’ squad.

Reed has played seven times for Blackburn so far and scored once in a crucial 3-2 away to Stoke City. McQueen has found games harder to come by with five mainly substitute appearances but looks to be in and around a strong set-up with Tony Pulis’ Boro side.

Josh Sims is at Reading and has proved to be a useful impact sub off the bench with two assists for Paul Clement’s men, whilst Ryan Seager has scored twice and is getting regular game-time on-loan at Dutch second-division outfit SC Telstar.

Both Jake Hesketh and Jake Flannigan teamed up with Nigel Clough at Burton Albion during the summer, and both have also found games short in supply. Six inconsistent appearances for Hesketh have seen him playing more than Flannigan with a 59 minute cameo in the EFL Trophy to his name.

Centre-Back Alfie Jones is currently with St Mirren in the Scottish Premiership and has played three times, including two full 90 minutes displays in the league.
