Southampton midfielder Steven Davis played the duration of Northern Ireland’s UEFA Nations League clash with Bosnia-Herzegovina but couldn’t prevent his side from losing 2-0.

The result sees Michael O’Neill’s side sitting rock bottom of Nations League Group B3 after they were defeated by Austria last week, and Davis will now return to Southampton ahead of the next round of Premier League games.

Roma striker Edin Dzeko was the man who made the difference after scoring a brace with a strike either side of half-time.

Northern Ireland had some great chances of their own in the game and managed to hit the post no less than three times over the course of the 90 minutes.

Davis will be looking forward to joining back up with his international teammates in November, when they will play a friendly against Shane Long’s Republic of Ireland and another Nations League clash with Austria.

More from Saints Marching

After not featuring for Saints much this so far this season, Davis will have been pleased to get some much-needed minutes under his belt during the last two weeks.

Whilst he is out of favour at St Mary’s, he remains a vital player for Northern Ireland and still retains the captain’s armband for his nation.

The 33-year-old currently has 103 caps to his name and that total sees him in third place in the list of record appearance makers for Northern Ireland.

With his future at Saints not looking too promising at this stage, a move away from the club has been widely mentioned. His old team Rangers are rumoured to be keen to take him back to Ibrox top play under Steven Gerrard’s new regime.

A move like this would certainly suit all parties and the Scottish Premier League could be an ideal place for Davis to end his career eventually.

He currently has just one domestic start to his name in this campaign after playing the full 90 during Saints’ Second-Round Carabao Cup tie against Brighton.
