Thomas Vermaelen linked with Saints

A Spanish media report has linked both Saints and Watford with a move for Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen.

Mundo Deportivo mentions the Premier League as the most likely destination for the 33-year-old Belgian when his contract ends at the end of the 2018/19 season and also notes Saints and Watford as teams to register an interest in the player.

Vermaelen joined Barcelona from Arsenal for around £17m back in 2014 and has had to play a second-choice role for much of his time at Camp Nou.

His time in England with Arsenal was the best spell of his career and he went on to make 150 appearances for the Gunners.

Whilst he would bring great experience to St Mary’s, Vermaelen’s injury record is something that would need to be looked at after a number of issues that have seen him miss large parts of recent seasons.
