It now looks unlikely that Southampton will be signing Birmingham City striker Che Adams on transfer deadline day.

Saints and Burnley had been pursuing the 22-year-old but SkySports are now reporting that the Blues’ current transfer embargo is making it difficult for them to agree to a sale.

Both clubs are believed to have made offers to take Adams to the Premier League but the embargo would mean that Birmingham would not be able to sign a replacement in the current window.

Whilst this is perhaps a blow to Saints and their fans who had been wanting some action on deadline day, manager Ralph Hasenhuttl didn’t rule out any late moves being made earlier in his pre-match press conference ahead of the weekend’s game against Burnley.

After being asked whether all his business had been done, he said: “No, not yet. I think on the last day there are always a few options that suddenly that pop up and show us that there is a chance to get an interesting player, so we are still busy.”

More from Saints Marching

The Austrian’s comments perhaps hint at a surprise move cropping up in the final hours of the window but it will surely be a race against time for Saints to get anything significant done in time.

There have certainly been a significant number of transfer links involving Saints during this month and fans will be eagerly waiting until 11pm this evening to see if anything materialises.

One move involving the club that is likely to happen is a loan move for Jake Hesketh to MK Dons, with SkySports also reporting this news.

If the young midfielder does join the League Two club, that would make it five first-team players out of the club in this window and no incomings as of yet.

Steven Davis went back to Rangers, Wesley Hoedt on-loan to Celta Vigo, Cedric to Inter Milan and Manolo Gabbiadini took a permanent transfer to Sampdoria for around £11m.

Hasenhuttl has spoken recently about wanting a smaller squad and that has certainly been sorted in this transfer window.

Will we see any late arrivals on the South Coast though?
