A stoppage-time penalty from Ashley Barnes broke Southampton hearts and ensured a point apiece at Turf Moor this afternoon.
Saints had led the contest since the 55th minute after Nathan Redmond’s sixth goal in ten games.
However, Jack Stephens handled in the area with just a minute to play to give Barnes the chance to convert from the spot and make it 1-1.
Despite the often hostile atmosphere at Turf Moor, Saints made a confident start and would have a huge chance to go ahead through Danny Ings after six minutes.
The striker got in behind the home defence and controlled a bouncing ball well but could only flick a volley straight at the advancing Tom Heaton.

Again it seemed to be a game where Saints would have the majority of possession – like against Crystal Palace in midweek – instead of playing on the counter attack as had been seen in Hasenhuttl’s first games in charge.
More importantly, it looked as though the end product in attack was very nearly coming off. Both Matt Targett and Callum Slattery directed efforts wide after superb crosses from James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond.
After a comfortable opening to the contest, they needed to stay switched on in defence to deny Ashley Barnes from breaking the deadlock.

A corner produced a goalmouth scramble and Jannik Vestergaard did brilliantly to block the Burnley striker’s turn and shot from close-range.
The home side were growing well into the game though and after Chris Wood blazed a good chance over, Barnes was outraged at not being given a penalty.
He raced onto a ball over the top of the Saints defence and television replays showed that he had been brought down by the advancing Alex McCarthy, but referee Anthony Taylor booked the striker for simulation instead of pointing to the spot.
With the hosts on top for the final stages of the first-half, it was important that Saints made a fast start to the second period.
Both Shane Long and Ward-Prowse would go close in the opening minutes. Long met a corner well and saw his effort cleared off the line before Ward-Prowse forced a sprawling save from Tom Heaton after connection well with Matt Targett’s cross.
However, they weren’t made to wait long before Nathan Redmond netted a potentially vital opener.
He received the ball ahead in a good position from Jan Bednarek, turned and advanced towards the box and unleashed a superb strike into the far corner for his sixth goal of the season.
It looked as though Saints would be able to see the game out, but inevitably the introduction of Peter Crouch for Burnley produced something to think about for the visiting backline.
One ball towards the 6ft 7in striker wasn’t cleared properly and the ball rebounded to Ashley Barnes, whose shot was superbly charged down by McCarthy.
If that was close for the forward, the next action would see him go even closer to an equaliser as he met a knockdown on the volley and saw his superb effort cannon off the crossbar.
Although it seemed to be going all the way of the Saints, Burnley were awarded a penalty in the last minute of stoppage time after Jack Stephens handled the ball in the area.
The luckless Barnes stepped up and converted to ensure a share of the spoils and lift both sides a point further away from the relegation zone.
