Southampton 2-1 Tottenham: Premier League – Three Key Players
By Erik Franzo
Yan Valery
Yan Valery got a first half lesson in what it takes to play wing-back in the Premier League. Matching up against Spurs and England International Danny Rose, who displayed impressive strength, pace, and experience from the get-go. It appeared it was going to be a long day for the Southampton youngster, but it was the veteran Rose who would make the big mistake to cost his team. While Valery would capitalize and score his second goal in two games, both against top six sides.
The goal itself was about being in the right place at the right time. Often, this is the experience that young Premier League players’ lack. However, Hasenhuttl’s trust in Valery led to a 5th consecutive start, and sixteenth senior appearance that has the Frenchman full of confidence. Evidence on Saturday was how Valery grew into the game and never backed down to the difficult challenge.
A lot has been said recently about Yan Valery and his development. The match against Tottenham was just another step in the right direction as he now has more Premier League goals than loaned out Cedric Soares.
