As well as loaning out some notable senior players, Southampton have moved out some of their academy products too this season.

Each of Jake Hesketh, Harrison Reed and Sam McQueen were sent out to get regular first-team football after not being given a significant squad place by Mark Hughes.

Hesketh joined Burton and is now with MK Dons, Reed is on a season-long deal at Blackburn but McQueen had his spell with Middlesbrough cut short by a long-term injury.

All three will return to Saints in the summer and will be hoping that Ralph Hasenhuttl’s faith in the club’s own talents can mean a role in his future plans.

Below is how Hesketh and Reed have got on in the Football League this season:

Next. What happened to the Saints 2002/03 FA Cup Quarter-Final winning side?. dark

Harrison Reed

24-year-old Reed has never managed to get consistent game time with Saints and has had to make do with appearances from the bench and in cup games.

This is despite being a busy midfield talent who is more than capable on the ball, but who seems to have got stuck behind some of the signings that the club have made in recent years.

More from Saints Marching

Last season saw him go to Norwich City on a season-long loan deal and get 43 games under his belt, and he looks to be doing something similar this campaign.

He’s played 33 times for Tony Mowbray’s side which included 27 starts in all competitions.

A large amount of Reed’s football has been played at right-midfield and he has been productive going forward with three goals and six assists in the Championship.

Jake Hesketh

It has been a strange season for Hesketh, who was recalled from League One side Burton in January only to then be sent out again to League Two MK Dons.

The 22-year-old could have been forgiven for being a little annoyed at this move from Saints considering the impact he was having at Burton.

He’d played 23 times for Nigel Clough’s side and netted two vital goals to help them all the way to the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

However, he is now under the guidance of former Saints midfielder Paul Tisdale at MK Dons and has made six starts and three substitute appearances.

Two goals have also come for him from attacking midfield positions, with his strike against Carlisle in particular showing his superb ability to shoot from long-range when capitalising on a loose ball.
