Midfielders

James Ward-Prowse, Right Midfield – 6.5

There was no doubting the effort from Ward-Prowse against Brighton and whilst he lacked the goal scoring threat he has displayed in recent weeks, he worked hard for the common cause. Proving that he has more than one string to his bow has been a great achievement this season and he provided his usual skill from set pieces. His added aggression is pleasing to see, although it did earn him a yellow card at the Amex Stadium.

Oriol Romeu, Central Midfield – 7

Recalling Romeu to the side has been one of the best decisions made by Hasenhuttl. Not always the most stylish player, the Spaniard revels in the less glamorous side of football with little fuss and ruthless efficiency. He produced a strong performance against the Seagulls with customary aplomb.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Central midfield – 8.5

The great Dane pipped Bednarek and Redmond to star man with a gusty and energetic performance, capped off with a smartly taken finish. The Southampton skipper has risen magnificently to the challenge of leadership after seemingly eradicating the immaturity in his game (evidenced in his reckless red cards earlier in the season). He talks intelligently about the game and if Southampton wish to continue developing next season, Hojbjerg could be integral to the chances of success.

Stuart Armstrong, Attacking Midfield – 6.5

A solid performance from the Scot was important in creating space for other players to run into. Armstrong’s busy style of play is effective in providing a pivot for the team in the fashion which so endeared Steven Davis to the Southampton faithful. He also had a decent shot blocked, although there are times where he dwells on the ball too long.
