Southampton: Saints’ 2018/19 Player of the Season announced
By Marc Walker
Nathan Redmond was named as Southampton’s Player of the Season at the club’s awards evening at St Mary’s this evening.
The 25-year-old has overcome problems brilliantly during this campaign to become the key creative force in attack for the second half of the season. Since December, he has netted eight goals and provided four assists in his new role within the side.
Saints clearly appreciated his efforts by voting him as their choice for the main accolade of the evening despite there being a number of strong candidates.
His emergence was rewarded by his teammates too as he also picked up the Player’ Player of the Season trophy too, and a smiling Ralph Hasenhuttl had some great words to say about the winger who could become a superb talent under his guidance.
Young full-back Yan Valery impressed hugely when he was brought into the first-team setup by Hasenhuttl and he was rewarded with two awards this evening.
The first saw him pick up the Goal of the Season award for his superb strike against Manchester United at Old Trafford back in March.

He then came back up onto the stage at St Mary’s to pick up the first-team Young Player of the Year award after some highly impressive showings bombing down the right flank.
James Ward-Prowse’s improvement since Hasenhuttl arrived was also acknowledged by honorary president Terry Paine.
Paine chose the midfielder for his President’s Choice award and spoke about the new qualities that have been added to his game.
Ward-Prowse was praised for his new-found aggression and goalscoring form that have seen him included back in Gareth Southgate’s England setup.
The club’s other teams have also had a successful campaign with awards handed out this evening too.
Academy player Will Ferry was named Academy Young Player of the Year after six goals and 10 assists for the Under-23s and Under-18s throughout the campaign.
A superb first year for the Women’s side under Marianne Spacey-Cale saw them win their league with an 100% record. Players Caitlin Smith and Shannon Sievwright were given the Girls’ Regional Talent Club Player of the Year and Women’s Player of the Year awards respectively.
