Southampton are reportedly one of five Premier League clubs to have enquired about Bristol City defender Adam Webster.

According to an exclusive report from TEAMtalk, Saints have joined top-flight rivals Newcastle, Leicester City, Burnley and Watford in chasing the 24-year-old this summer.

Webster was an important part of a successful season the Robins in 2018/19 as they managed a finish of eighth in a highly-competitive Championship.

He played 47 times in all competitions during the past campaign and helped his side to keep a respectable total of 10 clean sheets in the league.

TEAMtalk’s report states that Bristol City value him at around £12m currently and will accept offers that reach that mark in this off-season.

Saints are said to have registered interest in other Robins players as they bid to rebuild their squad for 2019/20 too.

Defender Lloyd Kelly was reportedly on their radar, but he joined Bournemouth recently for a fee of around £13m.

Webster has history of playing on the South Coast and started his senior career with bitter Saints rivals Portsmouth back in 2012.

More from Saints Marching

He joined Aldershot Town on an eight-month loan stint in 2013/14 before becoming a key player back at Fratton Park.

After two years, he moved from the then League Two outfit to Ipswich Town for a fee of around £850k.

After impressing at Portman Road, Bristol City spent big to bolster their backline and splashed £3.6m to take him from their then fellow second-tier side.

If a move is to materialise for Webster this summer then his current club can expect to make a good amount of profit on his sale.

As a young and clearly highly-rated player from the Championship, he would fit the type of player that Ralph Hasenhuttl would want to bring to St Mary’s to work with.

Defensive reinforcements should be high on the list of priorities in preparation for the coming season.

Another defender to have been linked with a move to Saints so far has been Gary Cahill after he was released by Chelsea recently.
