Southampton: Brentford join race for Southampton striker’s signature
By Marc Walker
Championship side Brentford have reportedly joined the race to sign Southampton striker Sam Gallagher this summer.
According to the Sun on Sunday and journalist Alan Nixon, the Bees have joined fellow second-tier outfit Blackburn Rovers in trying to secure the 23-year-old’s signature.
Rovers’ interest in Gallagher was also confirmed by Nixon earlier this month but he adds that both sides will need to find additional funding to finance a deal.
Gallagher is a proven goalscoring threat at Championship level after loan spells with Blackburn and Birmingham City in the past.
He found the net a total of 21 times in all competitions in his time at Ewood Park and St Andrews but found playing time hard to come by back with his parent club last season.
Former Saints boss Mark Hughes chose to keep him at St Mary’s for the 2018/19 campaign but he played just 235 minutes of competitive football in all competitions.

Saints are keen to offload a number of fringe players this summer so that they can also free up squad space and money for their own transfer business.
Their pursuit of Birmingham striker Che Adams has been well-documented and the latest report from the Daily Echo states that they will move onto other targets if their most recent £14m offer isn’t entertained.
With Gallagher already well down the pecking order, his chances of making an impression on Ralph Hasenhuttl will only decrease further once attacking signings are made in preparation for 2019/20.
Brentford’s interest in him is not the only transfer link that has been made between the Bees and the Saints this summer though.
Forward Ollie Watkins was said to be a player that Saints were looking at earlier this summer after some impressive goal and assist contributions from the winger for Brentford.
However, other Premier League sides in Sheffield United and Crystal Palace are also said to be tracking the promising 23-year-old.
