Southampton confirmed the permanent signing of striker Danny Ings on Monday after agreeing a fee of around £18m with Liverpool.

The 26-year-old joined Saints on-loan for the 2018/19 season but it was also announced at the time that a permanent agreement would trigger at the beginning of this month.

However, it appears that Liverpool may have to part ways with some of the cash they have been given by Saints in this deal.

According to a report from Lancashire Live, Burnley are due 20% of any profit that the Reds made on the deal.

They say that Liverpool signed Ings for a base fee of around £6.5m from the Clarets in 2015, meaning that they made an £11.5m profit when selling him on.

Burnley are therefore said to be due £2.3m from their Premier League rivals.

Ings proved to be a hit for most of his loan spell at St Mary’s last season and scored eight goals in 25 appearances.

More from Saints Marching

He was badly hampered by injury though – as he has been in recent seasons – and could have maybe contributed more had he been consistently fit.

However, he has said that he has worked hard during this off-season to prepare his body well for the rigours of another year of  top-flight football and will be a key part of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad in 2019/20.

Ings is likely to be competing with Shane Long, Michael Obafemi and £16m summer signing Che Adams for places in attack.

Hasenhuttl’s preferred 4-2-2-2 setup requires two strikers to compliment each other well and press from the front, meaning a pairing of Ings and Adams could be ideal.

The combined outlay from Saints on the two is around £34m and the team will be heavily reliant on their goals to fire them to a more comfortable Premier League finish this time around.

Adams and Moussa Djenepo are the only confirmed signings by Saints so far this summer, but they are also reportedly looking for defensive reinforcements before August.
