Southampton have reportedly had a loan bid for PSG full-back Stanley N’Soki rejected as they look to make defensive signings before the summer transfer deadline.

According to a report from French sports news outlet L’Equipe (via the Express), the Saints made an initial offer to take the 20-year-old on a temporary deal with an eventual permanent option.

N’Soki’s contract with the Ligue 1 giants runs out in 12 months time but it appears that another Premier League club has jumped ahead of Saints in the race to bring him to England.

The same report states that Newcastle United have made a £7m offer to sign him permanently immediately and this would be favourable if PSG want to get a financial return on their player.

There is some tough competition at Parc des Princes in the left-back role and N’Soki could well look to secure a move away to get straight into first-team football.

He is currently competing with Layvin Kurzawa, Juan Bernat and Mitchel Bakker for a position and looks unlikely to make a significant stride this season.

More from Saints Marching

Saints are in need of a back-up left-back after selling Matt Targett to Aston Villa earlier this summer.

Ryan Bertrand remains at the club and academy graduate Jake Vokins has made appearances so far during this pre-season.

Ralph Hasenhuttl is said to want Vokins in his plans, so perhaps a move for someone like N’Soki would prevent his young player coming through to become a regular in the senior setup.

N’Soki has little senior experience himself with 16 senior appearances for PSG to date, but he is clearly highly rated as a French Under-21 international.

With a full-back and centre-back reportedly wanted by Saints before the transfer deadline at 5pm on August 8th, a few defenders have been linked to the club.

It remains to be seen whether the club can get further deals over the line after the arrivals of attackers Che Adams and Moussa Djenepo.
